Being the successor of an absolute masterpiece created by a Square Dream Team, Chrono Cross was incredibly highly anticipated… Sadly, it not only failed to live up to the hype, it was a rather disappointing experience to most fans of Trigger, as it didn’t quite respect its legacy. Quite unlike Trigger, its storytelling was slow and poor. It tried some interesting new gameplay ideas, but it was relatively disappointing in that aspect, too. I did like one thing about it a lot, and that’s Harle – one of the best characters in gaming, period.
Well, actually, two! The soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda is amazing, many could say it’s even better than his work on Trigger. As far as I’m concerned, they’re about equal. There are a few songs that a lot of people adore… But, in typical fashion, I’m not featuring one of them. Instead, I picked the amazing Forest of Illusion – an upbeat, yet mysterious theme that describes the part of the game it appears in nicely.
