Back in the amazing days of the early-to-mid 90s, the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis was staying ahead of the Super Nintendo mostly thanks to the truly unique games it had to offer. Ecco the Dolphin was one of those games… A game that has you take the role of a dolphin armed with just your ability to emit ultrasound (okay – almost ), undertaking an adventure in the vast ocean, Ecco was a true visual marvel for its time. Even today, I am amazed with how beautiful the ocean looks.
Back in the day, while it had caught my eye, I didn’t really have the patience to learn how to play and get through it. Finally, I beat it a few years ago when I got the SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for PS3 which it is part of (along with many other amazing SEGA 16-bit games like the Sonic series, the Phantasy Star games, Golden Axe, Ristar, Comix Zone, Streets of Rage, etc., etc.). And it’s truly worth it! The soundtrack is quite nice, too, but dwarfed by the SEGA/Mega CD version of the game that came out a year later in 1993. So I picked the atmospheric SEGA/Mega CD version of the Undercaves theme for this week – it fits the game perfectly!
