Very Hot topicWhat are you currently playing?

Finally tried out that GBC I bought. Verdict: It sucks. And yeah, some things were obvious like the lack of sleep mode (something I've been hung up on recently gaming-wise), no backlight (screen is much darker than I thought it would be), the game's save battery expiring (it still works, at least my copy does), and the fact it needs AA batteries. (which seemed like a good thing at first since no having to charge it, but started to seem like a very bad thing the more I think about it since I'd be forced to keep tabs on my battery supply and always worry bout running out) But there's another massive flaw to the GBC that I had completely failed to anticipate and which is even more of a deal breaker than all those other things: that being the power LED! Ugh!

So you're practically straining your eyes just to see the screen cause it's so dark, meanwhile that red LED (which is huge btw) is running full blast right at your face. Headache inducing. On top of that it kills the magic of the GBC. It's not backlit so at least you could imagine the pixels are physical as opposed to light being displayed. Find a wood grain GBC case to get the full effect. But that LED ruins this aspect. It's so overbearing.

But why am I complaining, I could just take apart the GBC and put LED blocking tape between the LED and the insids of the case. Only, I don't really care at this point. Buying the GBC seems like it was a silly thing to do at this point and if I sell it now, it would be better if the LED tape is not there. ... But why though? If I know that LED tape will make it better then the buyer should thank me for doing it. And it might be a fun little project for me. And, oh right, I have some spare AA batteries that I need to use up! Lol. So I might as well.

If I do take it apart, though, I might as well install a backlit screen? Seems like it will drain the battery really quickly wouldn't it? I will have to research this.
Edit: apparently, this requires cutting/modifying the casing. Guess that's out.
Before, I looked at an ebay listing for aftermarket screens (the $60 one) and it did not mention this. I'm confused..

lol I could have told you that. Gameboy color is only cool for a little while. GBA SP is perfect though. It has a light and you can close it! I actually still use it on the train sometimes. I got the american bright light version. It's pretty fucking bright on the highest setting.

I started Xenogears in Japanese on the PSP, and I think I'm almost done with Tales of Vesperia... 2020 will be the year I beat it, after starting it in October 2017. I've clocked over 100 hours now, there's even a trophy for that.

84% completed DKC Returns, got all kong letters and most puzzle pieces. I'm getting a bit fatigued of the game which is making me want Tropical Freeze less.

The game has a rollercoaster effect.. some of the time it feels like a rad game while other times it's frustrating and vaguely unpleasant. Not exactly the ideal wind-down game even though it has served remarkably well at this purpose considering its high difficulty. (I have godlike skills, apparently, and I guess thay's why I'm able to find the game relaxing.. most of the time anyway)

Nice going Vlad! :)

Rock, sounds like you played too much of the same game. Just.... maybe put it down. :-P
I find all DKC games stressful. I can see they are damn good but I really can't deal with dying so quickly. I've never even beaten one level of the original. I suck at platformers. I just want to walk around peacefully and look at the scenery. Any game that lets me do that is great in my book.

100% completion but I think that only counts levels beaten or something. I didn't even find all puzzle pieces yet. Although I found them in all but two levels. I won't bother, since those two levels are too hard. Anyway it looks like I'm pretty much done with the game. Good show, Retro Studios. Good show.

Maybe 2DS isn't so bad. And I should try more 2D platformers. But I think Kirby and Yoshi are boring, dunno why Nintendo keeps shoving those two down our throat. DK... hell, DK should replace Mario. It actually has some personality! (Whoa...that's an ironic statement I just made. Since Mario's first appearance was in Donkey Kong. Things would have gone full circle!)

Hehe it's not like nintendo is actually shoving those games down our throats that would mean they would have to give em away for free. no way in hell they would do that. I think they make those games specifically for young children. I played a yoshi demo on the switch and it really felt like a game for 3 year old kids. Never liked those games either. I feel like they want to dumb down Mario as well. Odyssey felt like a kiddy game way more than 64. The older games have casual appeal but they can be pretty challenging too. Mario Odyssey though..... The controls are tight as hell but really there is no challenge and the world just feels like a backdrop for mario to do his tricks. And that fucking Cappy.... Nintendo should burn that shit as a sacrificial offer to the gaming gods to make amends for their bad platformer strategies.. I'm surprised they are not ruining Zelda and even improving it. I guess they want that to be their 'adult-ish' franchise. Lucky me.

The R button on my white sea green 2DS started getting jammed so I took it apart to try and fix it.
Afterwards it still had issues so I took it apart again. Then again a third time. I think I might have really fixed it this time but I don't want to jinx myself.

Doing this makes me really like this particular 2DS. It's like a drug I think. This is exactly the high I was craving by buying used/old junk instead of a Switch Lite. You dust it off, fix it, it suddenly feels like it yours.
I liked this 2DS anyway because of the color. It's also the system I started playing DKC Returns on. (At least until the R button started acting up)

My like of this 2DS and taking it apart makes me want to get into the 3DS library more, see what it has to offer. Right now I'm playing Ridge Racer 3D.

Cool that you fixed it! The 2ds thing is the weird 3ds right? It can't bend and close.

Yeah that one. I wanted a flip one too but only to take it apart and block the LEDs that stay on in seep mode. (Because in my opinion having LEDs that stay on in sleep mode defeats the point of having a sleep mode in the first place) I felt that would be a fun project for me but I could never really justify it since I was more interested in the frankenstein job than actually using it.

I took apart my Game Boy Color and used a black marker to paint over the power LED bulb. What's funny is that the bulb is still super bright when you turn the system on. Not surprised by this at all but it was worth a shot. At least it's dimmer now than it was before so I've started a grass type singleton run in Pokemon Trading Card Game and already became engrossed. The GBC may have been a good buy after all.

I just used electric cable tape to block out the light. Works great.

Well yeah, I bought a label to cover it with. But after taking it open I realized that would not work. I imagined the LED would be flat but it's not. It's literally a light bulb that sticks out and goes in a hole that reaches all the way to the front of the screen.

In other news, the stupid R button on my 2DS would probably be so easy to fix if I can just get a replacement spring.
I did clean the buttons though which seemed to helped. Interesting, so it was not just the spring causing it, but dirt too..

Edit: yeah, I can get springs on ebay. US seller. He has a plethora of Nintendo console parts including L/R buttons and springs for all the various 3DS models. Bought a set of springs and back plate while I'm at it.

this sounds more expensive than getting a wellfunctioning one. I guess that would not be as fun for you though. :)

No, you're right. Maybe I just tend to make bad decisions. This R button thing is not pleasant at all. I dwell on it 24/7. Reminds of the L button creaking on the original model Vita, I got fed up and sold it. I keep wondering of that's exactly what's happening here. But then I realize that in the worst case scenario I can just upgrade to a better 2DS. Because I know that not all 2DS do this. Which means that in theory it's totally fixable and I intend to fix it. :p

Anyway, I'm still able to enjoy the system for the time being despite the R button sounding like a dentist pick. Got up to tier 1 in Ridge Racer 3D.

You don’t eat £55 steaks everytime though right. Most of the time people eat cheap factory meat they buy in the supermarket.

No not every time. Today we’re going to that restaurant though for Claire’s birthday. I won’t get that steak but I’ll probably get the normal fillet steak. They do a cracking lasagne too, it’s all made with the best fresh ingredients and you really can taste it

When we visited Cala’n Bosch on the island of Menorca we found this little restaurant out near the beach down a side street. Oh my god, the food was amazing. We got to know the owner, his name was Charlie. We were all inclusive so got our food for free at the hotel but we ate at Charlies in an evening 5 days out of 7

We went for Italian thus afty. Isabellla got wild boar sausages and mashed potatoes. Then we popped in a pub with a live band and Isabellla was dancing. I love days like today.
