Hot topicTactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together playthrough [SPOILERS]

Finally beat Xaebos, after another try that was one battlefield square away from success (couldn't resurrect someone in time because I was one square too far). I used the first turns to give Magic Leaves to Donnalto, who then sped up himself and the two wizards. They proceeded to deal damage to the golems and orcs. I flanked with Denam, Canopus and Arycelle so I could kill the healers. Arycelle got caught halfway through, and had to withdraw to be healed. Denam got brought down, but Canopus resurrected him when the time was right (after the first try failed). Eventually, I killed everyone but Xaebos, and I had one unit down, so it was a race to save a Blessing Stone. I finally brought the man down, and, in the cutscene that followed, Galgastani remnants threw their support behind Denam, even if they knew his views were too idealistic. And I received news that Coritanae had fallen to the Resistance... That was a very brief moment in which I had it as my HQ.

Now I'm upgrading my party, and I found out that I can make Canopus into an even more diverse warrior - I taught him Holy attacking spells. :) I've also accumulated lots of Oberyths, so I'll be doing a little shopping, too. Also, the Resurrection spells is EXPENSIVE! 100 MP when Donnalto's got 115 or so in total. Wow.

Yes. Tactics Ogre hates the idea of you resurrecting anyone. I can't remember if the remake is the same way, but in TO original you only get one copy of the Resurrection spell too unless you want to do the horrible, horrible Hell's Gate optional dungeon (100 floors of zzzzzzzzz) to find another. Plus, at least one of the few classes that could use it required the unit not to have killed more than 10 people in the game. Craziness.

Hah, the original sounds more and more fun than the remake. And I've only got one Resurrection spell so far, I taught it to Donnalto, and they aren't found in the shop. No idea how I got it, no idea how I'd get another one, either. But Blessing Stones work well enough... If you've got the 2000 Goth apiece to spare. Though, to be fair, some can be acquired as loot in battle.

Anyway, I upgraded my peoples, got some new weapons and stuff, taught the wizards some spells they can't use yet (level 2 Firestorm and Cragfall). Next battle is against a party led by some mage, and I have to save some samurai dude. Seems he can hold his own in battle, so chances are good he doesn't die before I take out the mage.

Pretty good progress in the last couple of days. First, I beat that mage quite easily (although the samurai I was trying to save died the first time... The second, thankfully, some enemy ninja bound him to his place, not allowing him to foolishly rush at the enemies instead of allowing me to heal him). In a lame fashion, upon joining me, he lost his abilities and couldn't even wield the weapon he had. -_- He is blind and apparently, he hates Lodis - he blames them for his blindness. Then, storming Coritanae again. The first battle had all the makings to be really tough - there were a bunch of dragons in the enemy team, and even a kraken. But the terror knight in charge decided to come at me, and I wasted him before his monsters could waste me (though they did bring a few of my men down).

Then, inside the castle, Denam was confronted by Leonar. Denam tried to turn him away from the Duke, but Leonar insisted on fighting to the death. I was offered a choice to fight him solo, or have a normal battle. I chose the latter, but then decided to see how the former plays out, and it turns out I can totally cheat through that fight by staying away from him and just collecting TP to then use for my Dark Blade "finishing" attack, which can hit from a distance. His own finisher required him to be right next to me to use, and, since Denam is a ninja, that was impossible because I kept staying out of his reach. Then I did the normal battle I'd decided on anyway, and Leonar had interesting conversations with Denam, Arycelle, his beloved, and Donnalto. It was a much easier battle than it should've been... He really should've been tougher than Xaebos, for instance. Instead, his party couldn't bring even one of my men down. Wtih his dying breath, he revealed the Duke's plan to rule Valeria as a vassal to Lodis, and told Denam to go and stop him. Off to Rhime we go.

That beast master Ganpp I'd beaten a long time ago showed up again as I was crossing the mountains and heading to Rhime. Aside from the usual bird-beasts, he had a couple of weirder ones, who are literally chicken-heads. The battle takes place on pretty steep terrain with what looks like lava(?!), and shouldn't be too tough... if Ganpp didn't have the annoying gimmick to weaken ALL my party members every time I kill one of his four creatures. And it's very hard to not kill them because they rush at my party like crazy. There are also 3 Vartans that have Heal II, so it won't be easy to just go and kill Ganpp, either. Well, I'll have to figure out a way to win this.

I somehow managed to make it, since Ganpp was stupid enough to charge at me. I brought his health down to 20% or so, and he teleported away. Then, a cutscene. Catiua was hanging around in Golyat, and the Knights of Lodis' leader, Lanselot Tartaros, appeared out of nowhere, telling her she was really a Bakram princess. The late king apparently cheated on his wife with some maiden. Interestingly, Lanselot claimed that Denam and Catiua weren't really blood-related. Somehow, I feel that they share a father (the king), but we'll see. Lanselot then took her away.

Upon arriving at Rhime, I saw Vyce on the move with some knights. He didn't see me, fortunately. The Duke was meeting with Lanselot Tartaros, when the knights stormed the room. Duke thought Lanselot had betrayed him, and Vyce entered the room from the Duke's side, telling the Duke to come to him. As he did, the cur stabbed him, and then his knights surrounded Lanselot. Vyce ordered them to kill him.

Back to Denam, some Bakram troops cornered a couple of Lodis knights, Oz and Ozma, a brother and sister. Denam appeared with his men, and those two managed to escape. The Bakram hotheads attacked Denam. The battle was really easy because their leader, a terror knight, thought he could rush at my troops with his low defence. lol. I dispatched him quickly, and it was time for another cutscene...

With the aid of Oz and Ozma, Lanselot had killed Vyce's knights, and Vyce was on his knees, begging for mercy. Lanselot decided to let him live, so long as he never appeared before his eyes again. Vyce scrammed. We find ourselves back on the map, and our path leads to Almorica... One last battle with Vyce, perhaps?

So I went to Almorica and nobody was in my way... The troops there just pledged their allegiance to me. That's cool, I suppose. I also met a couple of Lanselot's knights and they joined my party. The magus Warren was also with them, but he was sick and asleep. Hopefully he recovers soon... I could use a powerful mage in my party.

We got news that the dark knights had headed to the Bakram Liberation Front's fortress, and we headed that way... The dark knight Oz was just about to torch the place, but we interfered and a battled ensued... A battle my party was terribly ill-prepared for. The two new White Knights are just Level 3, and drop like flies. ALL the enemy soldiers (templars) are quite capable, deal significant damage, and annoyingly cast spells to stun or petrify my people, too... The enemies have the high ground, too - Arycelle can't even reach them with her arrows, for instance. To top it all, Oz is a clever bastard, withdrawing in the back and letting his men do the dirty job while he chills, being the unit I need to defeat to win the battle.

I'll try one or two more times, maybe a defensive formation could have a chance... If not, I'll have to grind for a while. Hopefully, it can be avoided.

If I get rid of the "tourists" in my party (the two new white knights, and the samurai), and take a very defensive formation, the battle seems actually winnable... What's annoying is that I won't get white knight XP this way. Hm, I should probably try with one and keep him in the back, use him as a healer. I'll try that if my current attempt fails. But it's going quite well so far.

Augh, found out my PSP's battery had just died out while it was off. Wasted day. When I turned it back on, it hadn't saved where I was in the battle, either... Will have to start it over. At least that'll give me the chance to have one of the White Knights there instead of my secondary dedicated healer.

I have this won. Systematically, I killed off all of Oz's men. Only negative is that I used up all my Blessing Stones. It's funny how he's the only one left with a bunch of my units around him, and he's still all arrogant, asking Denam how he wants to die. :)

Battle won, and Oz escaped, of course... Most of the liberation front had been killed, but I managed to save Cistina's sister, Cerya, and offered her a place in my ranks. She accepted. She also told me about my father that the front had managed to free, but the dark knights just recaptured. I upgraded my units and bought some stuff. Phidoch castle is the next destination, apparently. Since I'm really bad at remembering these names... Is it Regent Brantys's castle? That's huge, Denam will probably take control of Valeria if (when) I win. First, I have to storm one of two walls, I chose the one that was further away. The enemy party is led by a samurai, and has like four golems. This'll be annoying and I'll have to stay defensive until I destroy them. I will use Denam to stun them via the handy Ninjutsu spell that makes his weapon stun people.

Happenings all around! I smashed that samurai dude because, after hesitating for a while, he got silly enough to come at me. Then, the dark knights saw that they were doomed, and decided to withdraw from the castle. But a couple stayed behind to attempt to stop me - Oz and Ozma. Before the battle ensued, Denam saw Catiua, who mercilessly assaulted him while he had his guard down. With a quick reaction, he managed to dodge the blade, Delita-style. But he just fell on the ground after dodging, and Catiua scrammed... It seems she's aligned with the dark knights now - is it lust for power? She certainly feels less attached to Denam after learning he was not her brother by blood.

The battle against Oz and Ozma would've been pretty hard, as enemies were coming at my party from all sides, and it was hard to defend from them all. However... Oz and Ozma also rushed at me, stupidly. I had to kill them both to win the battle, and so I did (Ozma had low defence, which helped - she went down first). Like half of my units were dropped, and Denam almost had his three turns pass, but I managed to resurrect him in the last possible moment, by resurrecting the unit that had his turn right before him, and was the only unit close enough to do so. To achieve that, sadly I had to waste my last 2 Blessing Stones. Right after, I killed Oz with Canopus' new finishing bow move, which looks insanely powerful (140+ damage on a relatively high-defence Oz).

Cutscenes followed. Vyce, who had rushed to Brantyn's aid after Lanselot spared his life, was executed so as to not cast any suspicions about Brantyn being involved in the Duke's assassination plot. That caught me off-guard - I certainly expected to cross swords with him again... And he died with my name on his lips (probably realising he should've known I knew best and never betrayed me). Chapter IV, called Let Us Cling Together, started. It was revealed that Denam was now the de facto ruler of the southern part of Valeria, and the scheme of Lodis to instate Catiua on the throne and keep Valeria as a vassal country was a success.

A really fascinating conversation between the two Lanselots followed - finally, we saw where the Holy Knight was - he was captured and tortured by the dark knights in a dungeon. It seems that he was also the one that took the dark knight's eye. The two chatted about the people of Valeria and ruling over them... The dark knight despised these cowardly creatures who would betray even those dearest to them in the name of a little safety, while the holy knight defended them, saying that they may yet show valour and surprise his interlocutor. Catiua then showed up and got mixed feelings at seeing the Holy Knight Lanselot, explaining that she was doing this because Denam had abandoned her (totally not true).

Denam learned where the Holy Knight Lanselot was by a spy he had among the enemies' ranks. While he was pondering whether to go and free him, a messenger busted in the room with bad news... After Catiua ascended the throne, even some of the Walister resistance, now under Denam's command, rebelled, as their religious leaders wanted to end the war and bend the knee to Catiua. They are at Brigantys castle, and Denam is now on his way to meet them. His intention is to speak with them in peace, but I have a strong feeling we'll be forced to do battle again.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Denam is now in more manly attire, sporting a cool bandana, too! Back to the story... So much for going by myself and unarmed... Denam brought his army along, and first some Galgastani mage assaulted them in the mountains right before Brigantys castle, and got defeated embarrassingly easily. He had a nice party, too, a dragon among it. But when you're a mage and enemy leader, you surely don't expect me not to send Canopus to dispatch you with a few arrows and end the battle. Then, at the castle walls, a bunch of Walister who joined this religious faction refused to speak to Denam and just attacked... For once, I had to defeat them all instead of just a leader. So it took me longer than usual, but at least I wasted no Blessing Stones... The poor souls never stood a chance - they only managed to bring down my tourists and my mage, whom I revived with Donnalto at the cost of a few Magic Leaves. "This parley has taken an ill turn...", Denam uttered after killing them all. Next, I'll do battle in the audience hall again.

Hot topicTactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together playthrough [SPOILERS]

This game is quite clever. Apparently, I should've made my party in front of the castle walls just Denam, and strip his equipment, and we would've avoided that slaughter... A "title" I got after the battle tipped me, and I decided to eventually redo the scene. Anyway, after I got inside the castle, a battle didn't await me - instead, it was a top priestess named Olivya, who told me that the leader of these supposed religious rebels was actually Denam's father, Abuna Prancet! However, his health was failing and he was on his death bed... Denam rushed to see him, and Prancet told him of his sister's true origins, then asked him to make the right choices and lead Valeria to salvation (I'll try!). Afterwards, he sadly passed away.

In the next scene, Olivya explained to Denam that he was actually a Bakram, and that Prancet was Regent Brantyn's brother, meaning Brantyn is Denam's uncle! It was also revealed that Denam had played with Olivya as a child... with Olivya and her three sisters, two of whom were right there in Denam's party - Cerya and Cistina! The third sister, Sherri, has apparently deserted the others in service to Brantyn.

And now we are off to seek these four sisters' father, a former Archierei of the church of Philaha. That's who Prancet asked Denam to look for, too. But before that, I decided to pass through Almorica and check on Warren. He was not fully recovered, but was visibly better, and Denam asked him for the true purpose of the Xenobian group's trip to Valeria. After much convincing, Warren finally spilled the beans - the Xenobian king had sent them to recover a sword with an unpronouncable and even less memorable name, a legendary sword for the nation of Xenobia, which the dark knights had stolen. Denam promised he'd recover it.

So... Side quests! I marched to Balmamusa because there were rumours there had been living dead there... And there were, and some Sibyl was trying to exorcise them, but failing. Denam and crew rushed to her rescue... But I'd forgotten to buy Blessing Stones, and my first attempt failed. BTW, Canopus' bow is eviscerating these fellows... He's probably got light element on it, or something. Well, I'll buy a few Blessing Stones and destroy these stupid zombies.

I bought some Blessing Stones before trying again, but I failed again, sadly. I'm too eager to attack, and they're dropping some of my men with their combined efforts. My clerics have got too much on their hands that way, and I can't exorcise the fallen enemies in time (they revive if you don't do it). I'll try again tomorrow, this time with a more patient attitude.

Apparently, these side quests are whole arcs. Jeez... With a more patient approach, I defeated the creatures of the night with ease. But, in the cutscene after, the poor sybil I saved succumbed to her wounds from the battle... :( Before dying, she told Denam the zombies would be marching to Almorica next, and that someone was commanding them. I think that geezer Nybeth is up to no good. I suppose I'll continue on this arc - hopefully it's not more than 3-4 battles in total.

BTW, it's pretty cool how the cutscene locations might as well be battle maps themselves - squared, with different elevations and everything...

So, I went to Almorica and... nothing happened. Thus, I decided to make my way back to the main quest. In the mountain pass before my destination (with lava and stuff), some Bakram warlock attacked me. I decided to take a patient approach, and it's paying off, though I probably could've dismantled that warlock with 2-3 arrows from Canopus. Instead, I'm killing dragons and stuff until only weak units are left.

Hot topicTactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together playthrough [SPOILERS]

I've reached the point where I can make the full 12-man party with just non-generic characters... Nice! Anyway, I defeated the warlock, and went to that monastery or whatever, to meet with the three chicks' father. Fortunately just in time before his fourth daughter, Sherri, could kidnap him and take him to Regent Brantyn. Denam killed the knight that was trying to take him away, and a battle with Sherri and her crew ensued. It was probably the easiest battle in the game so far... She came in my direction, and Canopus and Denam took her out with a few hits. She teleported away as her health got low, not before telling Denam that he had just gained a powerful enemy. Her justification for joining the Bakram, btw, was that her father had let her mother get killed, because he wanted power. Not sure what the truth is there, but I'm inclined to believe the other 3 sisters that it was really the fault of the people she was now serving.

Denam talked to the old man, and he asked him if he'd wage war on his sister... The now-typical 2 choices appeared and, as tempting as it was to choose I'd wage war on her, after taking a minute to empathise with Denam's feelings, I said that I can't do that, and that there must be some way to save her. The old man agreed to help Denam (sadly didn't join as a party member, just an advisor). Then, a cutscene with Brantyn followed... He had some bad dream - certainly an omen about things to come later in the game. As he woke up, some messenger brought news that Sherri had been defeated, and he dismissed her in the exact same way that she'd just dismissed that warlock I beat before reaching her ("Good breeding, but no substance").

And I was spit out on the map, with no actual direction. Decided to go back to Almorica. Nothing. Not even a continuation of the zombie side quest (I did come across some other side quest that's apparently a string of battles in some forest... Seemed easy, but who knows how many there are. I won't bother). So I checked the other castles, and a cutscene finally triggered in Phidoch castle. Apparently, Catiua had been seen training with dark knights in Brantyn's castle, and Denam decided to make his way there. Phidoch is apparently effectively my border with Bakram now, and as soon as I went north, some Bakram forces attacked my party. A terror knight whose defence isn't terrible leads them, and the battle is shaping up to be non-trivial.

A horrifying (yet impressive) side note... I redid the Sherri battle to see what happened if I chose to wage war on Catiua... And it's apparently possible to kill Sherri if you get her health down to 0 directly, without her ever being in the red... That's terrifying, and it means I avoided killing her by pure chance.

So I made my way to Barnicia castle, beating that terror knight, then some dragoon, and then an actual dark knight, though he was apparently originally from a country that fell under the rule of the Lodissian Empire... Canopus confronted him about this, wondering why he is helping the ones who killed so many of his compatriots. Apparently there will be at least 3 battles in Barnicia... The first one, outside the castle walls, I had to redo a couple of times. It was a very tricky battle, I had to defeat the whole enemy group, and they had a couple of golems who I barely managed to bring down with magic... Good thing my mages are good at blocking melee attacks. I'd brought 4 Blessing Stones along for the ride, and they were all spent in keeping my party members alive while I killed each and every enemy. Almost blew it at the end, too - some stupid dark knight mage was running to the very edges of the map and, caught with chasing him, I almost didn't revive Cistina. Made it with the last unit before she was to die, though. I went in further, and saw Lanselot Tartaros and Catiua. Another dark knight commander was talking to Lanselot, and insisted on fighting Denam, instead of listening to his leader, who was offering retreating. And so it will be. I will have to defeat this dark knight called Barbas (I think).
