Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

Image

I started playing BioShock on my computer. I'd been looking forward to this game for a while, but only now managed to get around to it. I got a new computer about half a year ago, and this is a good chance to finally see how pretty the graphics are... Recently, they decided to update the graphics, and were nice enough to give the updated version to all people who already had the game on Steam, so it's the BioShock Remastered version I will be playing.

I'd played 10 minutes or so from the regular version, not to mention the PS3 demo way back in the day. These updated graphics don't look that different... Which shouldn't be a surprise, as the game didn't come out so long ago... Wait, it's been out for nearly 10 years already? And I thought I was late playing FFVII in 2004... Well, whatever.

Here we go. My guy is looking at his parents' photo during a plane ride, and surely enough the plane crashes the next moment. In the middle of the ocean, no less. Miraculously, I not only survive, but see a small island with a tower on it right near the burning wreckage... Am I just hallucinating? I swim there anyway, and enter the tower. I enter some strange sphere and am transported underwater... I look at some pretty and colourful fish swimming around, and finally I arrive to Rapture, an undersea city a visionary called Andrew Ryan built to escape from the Cold War bullshit of capitalism and communism. I can understand. There are plenty of neon signs, skyscrapers... I suppose that isn't the right word in this context.

The short propaganda film that's projected for me explains his goals - in short, he wanted people to be entitled to the fruits of their labour. Fair enough. How he found the funds to build an entire city under the sea, I suppose I'll find out later. Two dudes are talking on the radio, wondering about me. One of them, Johnny, is right near me. Then, some monster attacks him, and I can't even try to save him because I'm still trapped in the sphere... He gets killed. The monster tries to open the sphere and get to me, but the other guy, Atlas, saves me by manipulating some drone thing to chase the monster away.

The monsters are apparently called "splicers." After it's gone, I get out and pick up some radio. Atlas will be guiding me from now on, it seems. Kinda like Comix Zone, except it's not a hot chick, but some dude guiding me over the radio. I pick up a wrench and smack some other splicer, then loot his corpse. Lots of items scattered all around, in trash cans and what not. Some you eat/drink immediately as you pick them up. I even got drunk after picking up a whiskey bottle, but blurry vision and stuff only lasted a few seconds.

Then, I proceed forward and find some weird "Plasmid" propaganda with some parents and their child with lightning at her fingertips? What? I find a machine right nearby and pick up something... Then my dude decides to just inject himself with it, and it's some strong substance that overwhelms and knocks him unconscious. I wake up to a couple of these splicers about to eat me for breakfast. But then some noise is heard and they run away, scared from "Big Daddy"... And the Big Daddy arrives, a huge spacesuit (kinda)-wearing robot-like entity. A little girl is with him, and she takes a liking to me, saying I was an angel, before realising I was still alive. "He'll be an angel soon enough," she says, and the two leave.

Atlas tells me that I apparently injected myself with this Plasmid thing, and now I can shoot lightning. Well, that can't be good for my health, but alright. My guy has some ugly chain tattoos on his wrists, btw. Atlas then tells me that his wife and child are trapped in a place called "Neptune", and asks me to help get them out. Of course, I want to help him, and make my way in that direction. Then a part of my plane's wreckage busts some windows open and water starts pouring in... I shoot lightning at the water to see if I'd get electrocuted, but nothing happens. Lame.

I destroy a bunch of splicers and Atlas explains these were normal people once, but Plasmids fucked them up. Oh, NOW you're telling me? Fuck you. Then, I watch a cutscene of a Big Daddy destroying some splicer who killed a Little Sister (that's what the little girls are called). Atlas explains that these girls collect "Adam", the substance that makes Rapture what it is, whatever that should mean.

Then, I reach a "boss fight," which is like 5-6 splicers coming out in a few groups of 2-3 at a time. One of them managed to kill me somehow - I suppose I didn't use First Aid in time. Kinda stupid because when I run out of Eve (BioShock's MP - I consume it when I shoot lightning), the game uses an Eve-restoring item automatically, but it doesn't for health. I also have 2 weapons now - found a revolver, too, a female splicer pushing it in a baby cart and singing to it like it was her baby. Sad.

Then, the road to Neptune gets blocked, I head to the other direction, "Medical", I am treated to a nice Andrew Ryan greeting intended for KGB/CIA agents infiltrating his city. He thinks I am one, I suppose? Well, I don't think so. That's it for today.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

Played some more, and it was time spent in the medical pavillion. I started getting challenging fights now, died 5-6 times. I learned about hacking, apparently just about any machine can be hacked, from vending machines and safes to even drones and turrets that shoot at you. Once you do, they nicely dispatch the zombies splicers, instead. Hacking itself is a dumbass pipe game... But it'll do. You can pay money to bypass the hacks (not worth it), or use "Autohack" tools you occasionally find.

I got a couple more abilities - Fire and Telekinesis. With the latter, you can pick up objects and bash the monsters or catch grenades and lob them back at them... Neat. Except I only have two slots for plasmids and I left those two, stupidly switching off Lightning which I need to disable turrets and drones so I can hack 'em... Oops. Will have to just run from them until I can buy a new plasmid slot (haven't seen where you can do that so far).

Apparently, some doctor performed plastic surgery in this facility, and this Adam thing apparently makes it easy to sculpt the human skin... What? Predictably, the doctor had gone mad and I had to kill him in a not-that-fun boss fight at the end. Everyone is mad in this game except me (not even sure about that yet), Atlas, the dude that got killed in the beginning, and Andrew Ryan... maybe. I've only seen recorded messages of him, but his castle sure is falling apart fast. Would've been nice to visit Rapture before it went to hell. Grotesque pictures everywhere now, e.g. a corpse with scissors shoved in its eye sockets... The game's art style is not particularly realistic, but that could've been a terrible sight.

I keep finding these "diaries" which are short audio recordings of people talking, and slowly I'm piecing things together to get the picture about Rapture. Encountered another Big Daddy and Little Sister, just going around, fortunately did not cross paths or anything. Approaching Little Sisters is apparently a criminal offence, so a voice from a speaker said. Not that you'd be worried about that while getting drilled by the Big Daddy.

Oh, and by the way, during one of loading times there was a Ryan quote along the lines of "It was not impossible to build Rapture on the bottom of the sea, it was impossible to build it anywhere else!" Okay then.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

I finished the level today. There was an area I couldn't access because I lacked the keys... That was rather annoying. The fun part was that I finally got to fight a Big Daddy, not before I saw another one somehow getting destroyed and leaving the Little Sister behind. She was at my mercy, and Atlas advised me to "harvest" her for Adam. But Doctor Tenenbaum, the woman who's apparently responsible for Little Sisters becoming the way they are, pleaded that I actually rescue them. I'd get less Adam that way, but I'd get a reward later on, she said. What the reward would be is unclear... She tossed something at me, and I used it to rescue the girl... She turned normal and thanked me, then ran away... Well, she looked normal, at least, although Atlas was convincing me that wouldn't be the case and she was doomed, anyway. Hm. Conveniently, there was a machine to spend Adam nearby, and I got "tough skin" or something like that. Kept 60 for later.

Anyway, just a bit later, I met another pair, but this time I had to fight the Big Daddy. I died many times, at least 6-7, before I could finally kill it... It can stomp the ground to stun you, has pretty high HP and powerful attacks, but if you run around and dodge at the right time, it's beatable. I finished it off thanks to some glitch, it got stuck in the stairs. But I'd already weakened it quite a bit and I'm positive I would've won even without that. Then, I rescued the girl it was escorting. My path was open to Neptune's Bounty, and there I went... I played just a bit more to take a look at the level, it's not too different from the previous one. Apparently, I'll have to fight another Big Daddy the first thing I do next time... Not too great. Later on, I should be able to meet with Atlas and his family. At least he said so.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

I got through the entire Neptune's Bounty today... Played for much longer than I had planned, which means I probably won't play in the next couple of days. Anyway, the Big Daddies in this level were "Rosies," they had shotguns and threw proximity mines at me. I died quite a few times on the first one, but then I got the hang of it and killed all 3 in the level, rescuing the Little Sisters. When I rescued the first or second one, a gift from Dr Tenenbaum awaited me. It was "Hypnotise Big Daddy" plasmid, meaning if there were other enemies around, I could use it to have the Big Daddy destroy them... Neat! But didn't find ANY use for it during this level. Why even bother when I kill them in a couple of hits, anyway.

I also hacked lots of cameras, bots, turrets, safes, vending machines... The game is almost getting easy with all the shit I have now. Picked up a grenade launcher, though I barely used it. Relying mostly on machine gun and shotgun, aside from the plasmids (Lightning and a new one I picked up which freezes the enemies and you can them shatter them being the most useful). Listening to the tapes found around the level, I found out that this guy Fontaine was stockpiling Adam and what not, leading a criminal organisation. He probably wanted to remove Andrew Ryan from power. Even forced Ryan to introduce the death penalty... What happened to their struggle remains to be seen. There was also a sad tape about a mother's girl getting turned into a Little Sister... Well, at least, thanks to me, she'll likely get to live when I save her!

Eventually, some guy told me to get a camera and take photos of 3 of these new spider splicers... I wasted like 2 hours because I'd missed the opportunity to take a photo of one of them, and a huge gate in the middle of the level I was supposed to go through was closed. That was really lame. I thought I was missing something and circled the half of the level I was stuck in many times before I finally found out the problem with a little consultation online. It's absolutely ridiculous for the developers to put an obstacle like this into the game, this basically ruins your save. Good thing I keep many saves. Eventually, I restarted from an earlier point and all was well.

I took the photos and the guy let me pass through this big iron door he had blocked from the inside. He then asked me to relinquish my weapons... Great! At least I had the plasmids. Then, a boss-like battle with a bunch of splicers, one of them, grenade-throwing at that, quite tough. Still, at the expense of a few first aid kits, I beat them... And got through the level. Still haven't gotten to Atlas' wife and kid. Next level is called "Smugglers' Hideout".

Been ages since I played Bioshock. It's a balls-deep amazing first-playthrough, the opening is so cool. It's got this Jules Verne vibe to it.

From memory it opens up like an adventure game, but turns into an action-heavy one. I would love for them to try and do something more Myst or The Witness like but I think they have moved on to making small games.

Jules Verne, yes. Good call. Yeah, now that I think about it, it would've made a great adventure/exploration game... But I suppose they wanted to make money, too. :P

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

I played a little bit today. Accidentally loaded a quick save and lost like 15 minutes I had to redo. Oh well. Went through Smugglers' Hideout, which was a very short level. It was a corridor, basically. In the beginning, I saw a flashback of my parents. I tried to gain entry for Atlas to the submarine where his wife and kid were, but Andrew Ryan (apparently - he announced it on the radio) trapped me in the control panel room, while he sent splicers to kill Atlas. Atlas wouldn't go down so easily, but had to retreat, as I couldn't help him. Magically, the door blocking me opened once he did, and I continued on, dispatching 6-7 splicers on the way. Atlas asked me to get to the submarine in his stead, and I tried... Only to see it get blown up and his wife and kid apparently killed. What the hell? We never got to see them, so I have to question if they ever existed (and there was this weird "Atlas" Steam card I got which portrayed some bald-headed monster. This Fontaine guy was also bald on the radio portrait of a "diary" thing I found... So Atlas is really Ryan's enemy who tried a takeover, and Ryan's after me simply because I am helping Atlas. I guess I just figured out one of the game's to-be-revealed-later plot points).

Thus, I proceeded to the next level, Arcadia, where 2 Little Sisters are waiting to be saved. In the beginning, Atlas swears revenge on Ryan (through me, of course!), and then Ryan phones me, too, explaining how even the air I'm breathing came from his account. Well, I suppose that's true.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

I played some more today... and yesterday. I was going through the Arcadia level, which was beautifully green, with lots of small streams, waterfalls and such, and turned out a bit big, so I had to finish it today. Some strange "Who is Atlas?" posters were plastered around. My hypothesis may be correct. Atlas called me trying to make some kind of excuse. Wasn't very convincing. I killed a couple of Big Daddies, rescuing the girls they were escorting. I'm getting better at killing them. The game almost seems too easy now. I found out I can not carry more than 500 dollars, so I started spending more. There were also these U-INVENT machines where I can make special bullets and autohack tools from materials I find here and there... Not a great selection so far, but there are useful things. Some new splicers also appeared, like a fire one that disintegrates and re-materialises elsewhere.

All in all, the level was about Ryan supposedly trying to destroy the trees and they are what makes breathing in Rapture possible. Atlas hinted me that I should find this woman researcher who was taking care of the trees, she could reverse the process. I found her eventually, but Ryan released some gas in her room to kill her while I could only watch (again). Then, in her safe, whose combination she conveniently gave me, I found the formula to save the trees or whatever. Gotta do a fetch quest to find the ingredients, I suppose. There were also traces of some pagan LARPers around the level. The researcher also talked about them on one of the tapes, they're apparently thieves, too. Oh, and I found a cool weapon that can shoot napalm and liquid nitrogen in her office. I destroyed two splicers in one shot... And I was thinking this game was getting easy. I also upgraded my Lightning ability to level 2 or whatever. Stuns the enemies for longer. Got a "Target Dummy" ability, too, but haven't used it yet.

Another flashback, of my home I guess, right at the end of the level... I proceeded to Farmer's Market. Not even a boss fight in Arcadia.

I never intended on replaying it, anyway. :P I just play games to beat them because I'd rather move on to the next one.

Did Farmer's Market today... The game just got too easy with all the cool shit I have. I burn people with napalm and what not... Just have to be careful afterwards not to step on their burning bodies because I take damage. I even half-refuse to buy upgrades now because that'd make it even easier. There was just one Little Sister in the level, I rescued her without even fighting, I just hacked the alarm and the bots and maybe some splicers took care of the Big Daddy. I had to find ingredients, namely distilled water and wax or whatever from some bee hives I found, and then make the Lazarus Vector at a U-Invent machine. The bee hive room was rather rough, you can release smoke to keep the bees away from you, but then splicers swarm and you need to kill them. If you run at the bees without the smoke on, they sting a lot and you take heavy damage. Eventually, I got everything and ran back to Arcadia to activate the misting machine. Ryan sent some splicers after me, but I destroyed them, even got to use the Hypnotise Big Daddy plasmid to send him after them. Speaking of plasmids, I got one where I can send bees to sting my enemies, but it's too weak... They do little damage. Useless!

Soon enough, I opened the path to the next level, where some artist awaits me. Forgot his name already. Once I kill him, path to Ryan should be clear.

I played some more. This Sander Cohen dude is making me do a "fetch quest" for him, that is, kill 4 of his "disciples" that "betrayed" him. WTF. Why is my guy just going along with it? This is stupid. Anyway, I killed two of them, and I also killed 2 Bouncers who were, like, on top of each other. As soon as I killed one, the other attacked me. I couldn't even rescue the girl before the bastard killed me. Well... After resurrecting, I promptly took care of him, and rescued the second girl, too. I've got lots of Adam now and I don't want to spend it because I'd get too overpowered. I only bought a few "hacking" upgrades because the hacking puzzles were getting too hard. I got a crossbow weapon which takes out goons in 1 hit. Not bad. I'll continue and finish the level tomorrow, probably.

So I killed the other two targets, and the final Bouncer in the level. In the meantime, I got a flashback of my mother as I was finding the body of a prostitute Ryan liked. Was she my mother? The audio I found didn't make it seem like that... Is Ryan my father who was cheating on my mum with this whore? Well... I also found audio of this McSomething dude, having some regrets about killing Fontaine because it disrupted Rapture. The violence was apparently inevitable, though. It seems the "good guys" simply lost their grip on the whole thing, and anarchy ensued. Something we could've guessed at the start of the game already.

Then, I destroyed the Cohen dude, too. He was celebrating his "masterpiece" and I decided to roast him with the napalm weapon... I didn't even actively kill him, he just eventually burned after I set him alight. I was going to the health station to recover in the meantime... Weak. Moving on to Haephestus.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

In the last few days, I played the Haephestus level. I freed all the Little Sisters as usual, and after exploring the whole place, I naturally had to do an annoying fetch quest to create a bomb to blow up a power core which would let me into Ryan's office. So lots of backtracking and running around, even more than usual. I eventually got it. I accumulated over 1000 Adam in the meantime, and I just don't buy anything more with it because the game will get too damn easy if I do.

Thus, I opened a path to Ryan's office, and there were some revelations awaiting me there... Ryan's apparently my biological father, and I was an experiment. How fucking lame. I thought I'd be the child of Ryan from before he built Rapture... Then, I was also able to be mind-controlled. I listened to some tape where an evil doctor made me kill my favourite puppy. How tragic. Then, Ryan just mind-controlled me to have me kill him. Why? What a stupid way to commit suicide. What a loser this libertarian is. Yeah, the other day he was mouthing off about how horrible it would be for the parasite of big government to devour Rapture... Well, seeing what a ghost city it had become, choosing death by my hand was perhaps not so strange. Still... Narratively, it was stupid and weak.

And then of course, Atlas reveals himself to be a bad guy - the game was building up to this. And he's really Fontaine. I read this game like a book... What an embarrassment this is. This is supposed to be one of the deepest games of the last decade. This is all you've got to offer? I am disappointed.

The moron sent some security bots after me (because those were such a sure way to kill me, it's not like I've destroyed tens of them so far), and then some Little Sisters opened a path for me to escape before I would run out of First Aids and die. So I did. I fell in some big hole and woke up some time later, with Dr. Tenenbaum apparently taking care of me. And there were Little Sisters all around the place - the ones I'd save in the game so far. They were playing together, some by themselves, some were sleeping... They were happy to see the guy who saved them. It was sweet. :) Making the gatherers be little girls at the end is perhaps the smartest decision these guys made for this game. Would've erased any emotional impact on me if they'd gone with their original idea of them being slugs or whatever.

Tenenbaum then explained to me about how I was being controlled by Fontaine and how I could break out of it by finding some clues in that evil doctor's apartment. So I'm off to the next mission. Fontaine tried to use the "Would you kindly" mind-control phrase again, but it apparently no longer works after I killed Ryan. So he tried to get my heart to stop beating, but of course it wouldn't for long. I'll have to kill him and that'll surely be the end of this game.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

Yesterday and the day before, I did the Olympus Heights level... Nothing particularly interesting, aside from Fontaine attacking my heart and sapping my health every once in a while. There were two girls guarded by Elite Rosies which I liberated, though with some difficulty. I bought a few more plasmids, mostly engineering ones. I also found a few lying around. Nothing particularly important. I got to visit the apartment of Sander Cohen, who was there dancing with some chick, and started fighting me when I approached him... So I killed him again. Then again, it just said "Houdini Splicer," so it's just another one in his image or something. I also saw the apartments of some other person whose name I forgot, Pepper-something... Also Dr. Suchong and, of course, Fontaine himself. I had to acquire the code to enter his apartment, and found a chemical there which liberated me from his grip, but I could no longer control my plasmids at will, they'd just change randomly. A path to the next level was opened, where I'd have to find the cure for that side effect.

During the level, Fontaine kept talking to me, and he even bad-mouthed Tenenbaum, implying I shouldn't trust her... But I have faith in her. After starting to care for the children, she wouldn't turn her back on me, right?! I think she'll stay true. I wonder if I'll get to take care of Fontaine in this game or that'll have to wait until BioShock 2. Lame if the latter.

I did Apollo Square today... Wasn't a very long level, an hour-something. I freed two Little Sisters, and eventually found the chemical that set me completely free from Fontaine's control. I also found out, via yet another recording, that Dr. Suchong was trying to make Big Daddies protect Little Sisters... It wasn't working, and he was angry, taking it out on one of the little girls... Then, of course, it worked, and that's how the immoral doctor found his end. I've opened up the path to Point Prometheus, where apparently me and Fontaine will settle this once and for all. He keeps saying Tenenbaum would betray me, but even if I believed him, what choice have I got here? I just go to fight him.

Normal topicBioShock playthrough [SPOILERS]

I have beaten this game... I did the last level in about 2 hours, and then I just pushed on because I just had to clear a relatively short level and get to Fontaine, the final boss. My guy's rather dense, there was a closed door only a Little Sister could climb into, so Tenenbaum suggested he turned himself into a Big Daddy to attract one, and he actually went along with it. Fontaine was telling me this would be a one-way street... I started doubting Tenenbaum, thinking she might make me into a permanent protector of her precious little ones, but there wasn't much time for doubts. So I went around the level gathering "Big Daddy parts," and eventually I became one - round helmet (narrowing my vision field) and all. This opened up the path to the next level, where I needed to escort the Little Sister through. She had health and could be killed. I tried my best not to let her die (loading multiple times to achieve it, of course). Eventually, we reached Fontaine, and I received a needle thing for gathering Adam - apparently only that way could I finish off Fontaine, who had spliced up like there was no tomorrow. He had 3 phases - fire, ice and electric... Much like my own elemental powers. He was pathetically easy (although I managed to die once in the beginning). I just shot him with the crossbow until he died. He didn't care to dodge much. He sent some goons and bots after me at some time, but I just focused on him and beat him easily enough...

And then, the ending. It showed my life until my death, basically. My guy refused to rule Rapture and just went to the surface, taking the girls with him. That way, they could go get brainwashed at university, get married, have children... And eventually, there my guy was, on his deathbed, and the girls all held his hand with their hands. What a good guy I am - an experiment with no real life of my own, but merely an artificial one. And yet, I'd given these real girls who became experiments their lives back... Whatever.
